Korea 2009

Its the first time we’re travelling with Je-in and i guess overall he’s been quite a good baby. He just follows his usual cycle of eat, play, sleep etc So we just gotta time all the activities around that. The one thing that bugged us on the plane though was that every time there was turbulence and the seat belt signs came on, we had to pull out the sleeping baby from the bassinet and strap him with a seat belt on mum’s lap. Of course this will wake up the baby and make him cry out. Now we know why babies always cry on planes.. Its the stupid safety rules!

They can simply overcome this requirement by modifying the bassinet to include some sort of safety harness.

Anyhow, the trip was pretty good and we got to see and eat lots of strange things as usual. Just some highlights from the trip:

1. Wedding ceremony – Beautiful and classy affair that included a buffet lunch, with the bride and groom making 3 costume changes for the main ceremony, greeting the guests in the eating area and the traditional ceremony itself.

2. Cheonan – Made a road trip to this city where V’s aunt lives and got to see how a typical apartment out of Seoul looks like. Very modern with electronic locks on the doors, alarms linking to the main guardroom, even the sink had sensors for the foot to tap so you do not have to “turn on” the tap.

3. King Mun Yeong’s tomb – The only tomb where they were able to identify the person because most other tombs have been raided over time. This guy was buried 1500 years ago and its amazing to see how everything was restored and the learnings they gleaned from this discovery.

4. Acorns – Was brought to a diner where everything had acorn in it. They even made it into a jelly and stripped down like noodles. Not much of a taste though, rather plain.

5. Duck BBQ – Fairly rare even in Korea, everything duck was on the menu, from the BBQ, duck soup and some innards.

6. Getting my hair permed – Although i must have swore never to do this, it did turn out pretty good and wasn’t obviously curly. I would have died otherwise.

V is now there with her parents and Je-in making up for lost time from her home country while i’ve got some me-time back here in SG.
